Celebrating Black History Month by Looking to the Future

40under40_640.jpgI look forward every February to reflecting on the achievements of black Americans and their role in the history of our nation.  I take pride in telling my son about the great leaders of the past and how they helped paved the way for the rest of us. This year I decided to embrace the next generation of leaders.

In honor of Black History Month, President Obama recently said,

“Every American can draw strength from the story of hard-won progress, which not only defines the African-American experience, but also lies at the heart of our Nation as a whole…..It inspires a new generation of leaders, and it teaches us all that when we come together in common purpose, we can right the wrongs of history and make our world anew”.

On January 29, 2014, I attended a ceremony at the National Harbor to honor “a new generation of leaders”.  David A. Sloan and thirty-nine other community leaders received the “Top Forty under Forty” award from the Prince George’s Social Innovation Fund (PGSIF).  This honor is bestowed on those young county residents that have excelled in their various areas of expertise and community work, including Business, Education, Public Service etc.  David was recognized in the field of Public Service.  “I am truly honored to receive this award.  It means a lot to be recognized by my community and to be included in such a distinguished group”, said David.

In this time of reflection it is not only important that we remember and honor significant figures in black history, we must support and encourage those that will continue in that great tradition, to make history.  This year,  I took great pride in telling my son about this next generation of leaders and how much I am looking forward to the day when David Sloan will be advocating in Annapolis as a delegate from District 26, uniting his neighbors in a common purpose…. to make the community better for everyone.

Run on David Sloan… Run on!
